Rineke Dijkstra
Vondelpark, June 10, 2005 | C-print

Rineke Dijkstra is one of the most successful photographers from the Netherlands. She makes portraits of people in a direct, confrontational manner. The photo entitled ‘Vondelpark’ is part of a series of park portraits made in Barcelona, Berlin, Manhattan and Amsterdam. She went looking for the right models in the Vondelpark, which is situated between her home in Amsterdam-Zuid and her studio in Oud-West. She was looking for adolescent girls and boys who would like into the camera in a laidback fashion. “Ultimately, I think that what you see must me psychologically true. Sometimes, when making the portrait, you will see a look or a posture in a flash that makes you think, ‘yes, that’s who you are’. However, this is not something you can force; you can only look closely. I don’t actually do anything myself.” The teenagers in this photograph look at ease and their poses are relaxed. The photographer chooses a central position to strengthen their postures, thereby creating a beautiful, calm image.
