Ryan Mosley
Distant Ancestry VIII, 2012 | Oil on canvas

Ryan Mosley's paintings approach to painting is at once both historical and fantastical. The paintings relate to notions of carnival and the grotesque. He invents and choreographs characters, often the weirdest of hybrids. There is humour in his painting, grotesquery and a perpetual ambiguity of mood. The portrait 'Distant Ancestry VIII' belongs to a series of physiognomic heads on subtile pastel-coloured, largely monochrome oval supports. It shows a mysterious person viewed from the side. The spacial depth around him, as a sun lightened scenery, creates the elusive atmosphere.
